Blue Communication

Communication is an important aspect of every community process, particularly on issues involving adjustments in the practices of everyday life and the adoption of good hygiene and protection against health risks associated with drinking water. For this reason it is important to find strategies that touch on these issues through an appealing and holistic approach.
Messages that we emphasize as part of the Blue Communication Strategy are:
  • We are all related through the water. The way we use water reflects our values and way of relating to other people. To receive, care for and share our water can bring pride and joy.
  • Water is the fluid of life itself, essential to the health of people and the natural environment. Water is a necessity, a common good and a privilege. Its appropriate and sustainable use is our responsibility.
In this vein, we have designed educational material that allows us to connect in a fun and enjoyable way to different audiences around four themes:

The Water Cycle

This theme is designed to raise awareness about the elements that make up the water cycle. All nature depends on water: our ecosystems, vegetation, animals and people.
Water comes and goes, we see it in many forms and it can surprise us with the paths it takes, sometimes hidden.

Water and Our Health

Based on the knowledge that there is a cause and effect relationship between our behavior and water; messages that concern us in this theme are:
  • Water gives us life and health when we take care of it, we have to take care of our water so that our water can take care of us.
  • With water, clean is not only what appears visibly clean, the water may be contaminated without our knowledge. Clean water prevents diseases.

Water and Our Community

This theme helps us to promote reflection about the benefits water gives us and our responsibility to protect these benefits. In relation to the symbolism around this vital resource: we form "water cultures."
  • Taking care of your water is to care for your world, your community, your family and your body.
  • To continue to have water, we should take care of it for ourselves and our neighboring communities.

The Risks of Water

In emergency situations water can become a danger, for this reason we also address water as a risk by spreading messages like:
  • When you see rain stay close to the community and inform yourself to prevent accidents, ensure your supply of water is clean and keep it well covered in case it becomes scarce.
  • Always take care of water and sometimes be careful of water.

Let's Play Water Lottery!

A dynamic and fun way to promote a positive water culture is the Water Lottery Game. Children and adults of all ages enjoy this game that promotes interest and encourage participation, while revitalizing a traditional game.
This game has been highly praised by teachers and primary school teachers who consider it an ideal choice for their educational work tool for environmental issues.

Murals that promote safe water consumption

Creating murals about water is an activity that creates a space where the creativity of the participants generate valuable ideas that reinforce the worldview of water in their community. Moreover, the participation of children, young people and the wider community creates a festive atmosphere ideal for integration.

In general the process of creating a mural consists in:
  • Choosing a group of lottery cards that the community wishes to refer to create a story related to water, preferably accompanying the images with a phrase that promotes safe drinking water to families in the community. They can incorporate other design elements that refer to local water culture.
  • With the selected items, the base is prepared with white latex paint and the chosen design is outlined with pencil.
  • Finally they color in each picture, and highlight the images by outlining the shapes and letters in black and dark blue.
